No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital initiatives.
